Welcome SITS Sistas!

Welcome SITS sistas'!
So happy to be the featured blog today and thrilled to make your acquaintance!
Come on in, the door is open (ooh, don't mind the dog, she jumps but just might lick your face)
On second thought, maybe we'll just sit on the front porch because the house is always a mess, and we can watch the neighborhood kids run in the sprinkler while we have coffee and brownies. They're always a little underdone at our house, just so ya' know.
Then we'll tell funny stories about our week and laugh loud enough to wake the baby.
I won't tell anyone if you laugh and coffee shoots out your nose, I promise!

We have a little bit of everything here. Some bullriding, some stories about people who just can't stop apologizing (Parts 1-3, no less!), and of course you can't forget our 2 monkeys at work.

Usually when I'm with friends and family the conversation eventually comes around to something like this: "Missy, tell your social work story about...." (Fill in the blank with any number of stories that fit into the category of you-can't-make-this-stuff-up)

Now I don't make fun of the sad stuff, the clinical stuff, or the HIPPA-controlled stuff. But that still leaves plenty, let me assure you! So maybe my new SITS sistas' would like to hear one?

Okay, so it was my last semester of my masters program, and I was doing an unpaid internship required for graduation... As in, 40 hours per week unpaid. As in, thank goodness for generous parents so I can eat unpaid! But I snagged the coveted internship slot as a medical social worker on the maternity & NICU floors at a large hospital in Austin, TX and I was over the moon.

One of my duties included routine visits to any new mothers that were under age 18, to determine if there were any resources that we could provide for them to make their transition home a little easier, and to assess their mental state. It was just a superficial assessment to look for obvious issues, because as well all know, you don't really fall apart post-partum until you come home and have to be ALONE with the baby! So terrifying! But I digress...

So one particular girl that had just given birth was only 14 years old. Healthy baby, healthy mom. She had a large, loving and supportive family who were always by her side. I kept popping into her room to see if I could catch her without all 20 relatives and giggly 8th grade friends (yep, I said 8th grade, you heard me right). I was really happy one late afternoon when I stopped in and found her alone with her newborn. Immediately when I walked in I noticed that there was something unusual in the baby's bassinet. Upon closer inspection it appeared to be a half-unwrapped Taco Bell burrito. I'm thinking "Ooookay, not so ideal to have adult food 2 inches from a newborn, but just let it ride for a minute because someone probably just placed it there accidentally and forgot it."

You don't see where this is going, do you? I couldn't either.

We discuss her support system, how it feels to have this new responsibility (those darn social workers, always obsessed with feeeeelings!), and her first diaper changing experience. Then it just goes quickly downhill.
Me: So how is he eating? (totally NOT connecting the burrito into the question)
Young'un: Yeah, it's kinda weird. He won't eat at all.
Me: Well don't worry, it takes a while for babies to establish eating patterns and I'm sure the nurses have discussed your options for breastfeeding and formula, right? But we can get them back in here if you're worried.
Young'un: Maybe, but I mean, I just laid the food there and he just won't eat. I even walked away and left him and he STILL won't eat!
Me: Huh? (ultra-intelligent response, as I'm still not getting it) So you're laying the bottle down for him and he won't take it like that? The doctors recommend that you don't feed them laying down yet, so you could try holding him to give the bottle.
Young'un: No! (meaning DUH! Why is this old-lady 23 yr old so dumb?) I left the burrito there for him and then walked away. Because you know, with my hamsters, sometimes they don't always eat when you're watching them so you have to like, give them space and see if they want it then.

Oh no she DIDN'T!
Homegirl was going to feed a 1 day old baby a burrito.
Needless to say, appropriate services were put in place and I couldn't sleep for weeks worrying about this teenager and her baby. Seriously folks, you can't make this stuff up!
More stories from a disgruntled social worker coming soon...

I LOVE hospital/work stories! I am the only nurse in my family, and they are always wanting to hear my gross/crazy stories. I can't wait to hear (read) yours! Congrats for being the SITS girl of the day!

That is hysterical! It's amazing what people will do in the name of "common sense"...I used to be in law enforcement....I have stories....

Popping in from SITS - great blog! I see this is why I won't be getting to putting the laundry away just yet, I'll be sitting here reading your blog!

Before I became a SAHM, I worked for a nonprofit agency doing vocational rehab, and through that I also always had some crazy work stories. (Think: job development so going to interviews with folks, also job coaching...) Thanks for the first chuckle of the morning!

Cheers!

Seriously?
That is the worst thing I've ever heard, and having a husband who's a physician means I've heard a whole lot of stories. But this one...
Sigh...

Loved your blog, but your story-of-the-day made me want to throw up! Even at 14, which admittedly is WAY.TOO.YOUNG....How? How could she possibly be serious? Hamsters?

I'm so glad you were featured on SITS today! I've really enjoyed reading blog so far today. My hubby and I adopted our little guy through CPS and I am familiar with a few crazy stories like this!

I can't wait to read more!!

WOW, I really hope that the baby is doing well and the young mom understands? I was 19 when I had my first, and that was still so young. I could only imagine. Thank goodness for people like you that have such patience and supporte to give her.

No way! She thought the baby would eat if she turned away? Like a hamster? And then I suppose Taco Bell is another issue. But like a hamster?

Congrats on your day! I always love visiting with you :-)

That is crazy. I would call it sad, and it reminds me of a teenage mom I met who was lamenting on how her three year old wouldn't "go to bed." (It was midnight, and I questioned his running around in a diaper, being obnoxious.) She said, "He's always been like this. I tell him to go to bed, but he just runs around and runs around until he just falls on the floor crying and goes to sleep right there!" I could not believe my ears. Poor thing. I asked if she had a bedtime routine, and she asked, "What's that?" Needless to say, the next night, I modeled the routine for her (he fell asleep imediately after my Goodnight song; literally closed his eyes and fell asleep--on a pillow). Young parents need help, and I'm glad that girl got services. Sorry for the long comment; I can't post this on my blog, as the mom is a family member and has never seen my blog, but I wouldn't want to take any chances...

Hey there I'm over from SITS. Funny story. I was a teacher's aid for a year. It seems whenever there are children involved it is craziness.

Hi just visiting from SITS. Post is hilarious. I know all about those stupid thoughts being 16 when I had my first. But trust me I never expected him to feed himself. We survived none the less and he is now 11.

Holy crap! I cannot imagine--how did you not just scream at her?
I won't tell you my special feelings for NICU/PICU social workers and how I ended up just not talking to them because I don't like reading about myself and my FEEEEEELINGS in my daughter's chart the next day. Good times!

Oh, my...I'm laughing so hard but I'm afraid that I'm going to hell for laughing at that story. That poor baby.

Came via SITS.

Oh and girl, you and I have the same fabulous taste in music. I'm loving your playlist at the bottom. I keep clicking on the wonderful "I'm Yours". I see some Bob Marley on there as well. I LOVE me some reggae and reggae rhythems. Thanks for that!

Here from SITS...oh my gosh, that's quite a story. Who would've thought a one day old baby wouldn't be interested in a burrito? LOL :)

OMG! OMG! I mean...OMFG!!! How is that even possible? I'm dumbstruck! My best friend is a medical social worker at a decent sized hospital. I am going to have to ask her for some funny stories. This is hysterical, albeit sad as hell!

oh.my.god. How dumb was she? Obviously never around a baby.

Oh my, that is really scary. That poor baby & that poor girl. With that big of a support system, you would think someone would have explained feeding to her. That is really scary.

OK - another comment here. Your little girl looks almost EXACTLY like mine did! Even The Husband said I could have passed off your videos as some of our child...she even had that same red dress with the ladybug!

You're my first SITS FB. Great post, too. Wow. I want to laugh, but ... wow.

Wow, I will have to read more of your SW stories! I started working with teen moms through a ministry (Teen Mother Choices - now going international by the way) in our area. I cannot believe all the stuff people talk about. We have to, because we have to help the girls, but it just feels like gossip and "Am I supposed to be hearing this?" Can't wait to check out more of your blog. Have a great day!!

OMG!! I've had a similar issue waiting tables. I'll have to write about it on my blog because there's just not room here. But it involves not understanding exactly what the doctor meant. I sure hope this girl was set straight! Love your blog and I'll be back later for those brownies -- love them a little undercooked too!

Kara said...

from SITS.......that is CRAZY! I'm very worried for this little baby now. Wow! "Oh no she DIDN'T" I was thinking the exact same thing. I LOVE your site. The design is so cool and way cute!

Heather said...

Oh My Gosh. Way know what that is why parents shouldn't freak out when their 14 yo comes to them for birth control. That truly is a sad story, but seems very funny when you add..."Oh no she DIDN'T".

I'm definitely going to be back to see what other crazy stories you have for us. Have a great day!!

congrats on your SITS day!!

Your blog is so charming, I can't wait to read more! My children wanted to share candy with their younger siblings when we came home from the hospital, but I can't believe someone could birth a baby and think that! I'm sure that was the tip of the iceberg as far as what she needed to learn. Wow!

Congrats Missy on being the featured SITS sister today! I really like the layout of your blog, but I especially like the saying under your title! It's so true!

Oh my gosh. Is it bad that I'm looking at the clock thinking "It's 10 till 2... I could still make a run to the border if I hurry." I know that was not the intent of your post but wow. I could really go for a burrito right now.

What a sad sad situation. It is hard to imagine, but then she was but a child herself. Which of her supportive family members brought her the burrito?
I loved the tribute to your grandpa. It was beautiful. I am sure your father was blessed by it.

Scary burrito story! You'd figure that all her relatives would had helped her out! Now we can see why Britney can't raise her kids either. It's insane!

Lauren said...

OMG! My 3 and 1 year olds know that babies use bottles.

This does remind me of someone who is distantly related to my SIL. When SIL oldest son was born, the relative told her that you could put steak in a blender and then feed it to the baby in a bottle. Where do these people come up with this stuff?

Sleepless Sabra said...

Oh my goodness. It's a little bit funny but SO sad. I'm glad you happened to check in on her at that moment! Wow.
